WHY BIOGREEN?

BioGreen provides world’s best biodegradable and compostable plastics which adheres to all International and Indian standards of testing for biodegradable plastics. We use cutting-edge technologies to invent the plastic bags that are edible by the microbes present in the soil. Our bags biodegrade, even if it is buried deep in a landfill unlike other degradable materials available in the market. As a result, our bag breaks down into organic matter like water, Co2, CH4 and Humus.

Our products are under constant evolution with over 32 years of research, development and production experience. This critical knowledge of plastics, state of the art ISO 9001 production site, extensive independent third party testing results and thousands of internal biodegradability and composability tests for our customers generated in our onsite laboratories operating in accordance with ISO 17025 makes us the most preferred packaging partners.

With our focus on individual customer needs, you can choose whether your BioGreen finished bags are manufactured from biopolymer or bioplastic resins giving you complete control over our products. We make it easy to build unique custom packaging products that are catered to your business requirements.

The science behind Biodegradable Plastic

Background Information:

The human race continues to advance the use of plastic material, as it is a robust component of our everyday lives. The search for biodegradable plastics has gone on for decades in an attempt to meet this growing demand and solve the consequential environmental issues. This search for biodegradable plastic has been a long confusing road from the technology standpoint, beginning with degradable plastic.

Degradable plastic is designed to be broken down by light and heat, originally named photodegradable and remarketed as oxo-degradable and now oxo-biodegradable.

Photodegradable products which are marketed with the new name oxo-biodegradable do not 100% biodegrade but degrade leaving behind microplastic. These technologies are no different than the photodegradable technologies in the final outcome of the product. The plastic   pieces are left behind for microorganisms to consume over a long period of time.

The name change from oxo-degradable to oxo-biodegradable comes as no surprise as a biodegradable product is the consumer’s ultimate desire. Plastic biodegrades naturally and when photodegradable/oxo-degradable/oxo-biodegradable technologies are exposed to UV light the polymer is fractured into pieces, leaving (as they claim) a potentially increased ability for microorganisms to consume the broken-down polymer. This product only works when it is littered, as degradability triggers in presence of UV light. There is no scientific evidence to show that these plastic fragments are then consumed at an increased rate due to the technology.

BioGreen Packaging Pvt. Ltd. uses a combination of additives that when added to normal resins can encourage the biodegradation of the plastic material by a reaction with enzymes created by microorganisms. The current culture is led to believe that plastic is not biodegradable. This is incorrect.   All plastic is organic in nature and has been proven to biodegrade by microorganisms by several different groups.

Our technology allows microorganisms to produce CO2 and CH4, both of these are the result of the consumption of plastic. When microorganisms consume anything aerobically or anaerobically these two gases are produced. Anaerobic biodegradation produces CH4 and Aerobic biodegradation produces CO2. Our technology allows the microbes to consume the plastic product in all active microbial environments under all climatic conditions.

The Science:

Microbes produce enzymes, these enzymes are part of the organic cycle that produces reactions. Reactions by enzymes that are produced only by microorganisms create catalysts that are formed by gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The catalysts accelerate metabolic reactions. The metabolic reaction we use (even though there are multiple metabolic pathways in this reaction) is carbohydrate metabolism.

We boost the ATP to carry more energy back to the pyruvic acid (Anaerobic) or the Acetyl CoA(Aerobic) cycles. This in turn creates proteins or lipids from the Pyruvic Acid cycle (Anaerobic) and acetyl CoA cycle(Aerobic).

This process created by microorganisms does not occur on the shelf, nor does it occur when water is in contact with the plastic. This reaction of microorganisms only occurs when the product is placed in an active microbial environment. The Biodegradable additive attracts over 600 different types of microbes to consume the polymer. The enzymes that the microbes produce react with the Biodegradable additive creating a catalyst that breaks down the molecular weight of the polymer making it easier for microorganisms to consume the plastic. This is called biodegradation.

TECHNOLOGICAL BENEFITS

BioGreen uses the latest environmental scientific and green chemistry research to minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances. Our bags once exposed to enzymes that act as catalysts found in landfills, the microorganisms will penetrate the BioGreen treated plastic while other ingredients expand the molecular structure, making room for the incoming microbes. The microbes attract other microbes by releasing chemicals in a process called quorum sensing.

Quorum sensing is a process by which the microbes determine where to nest and grow once they have found a reliable food source. Collectively, they feast on the polymer chains, breaking down the chemical bonds that hold the plastic together.

All BioGreen bags and films are certified biodegradable and compostable according to the US Standard ASTM D 6400, European Standard EN 13432 and Indian Standard IS 17088. BioGreen bags are reviewed and approved in many commercial composting systems across India.

Our customers should be confident that they are using the best truly compostable product with the highest integrity on the market.
